This was the first Toshogu shrine, built by the dictate of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The unique gongen-zukuri architectural style used for the main shrine was created in Kunozan, and served as the prototype for Toshogu shrines all over Japan. The vividly colored shrine hall has been designated as a national treasure, and it holds a great number of important cultural properties.
